"What color is Carolina blue?

For more than two centuries, even before the University of North Carolina began playing college basketball, the school has associated itself with a specific color that can safely be described as blue. Exactly which blue has been the question.

Carolina blue isn’t like any other blue, says fashion designer Alexander Julian. It’s not powder blue. It’s not baby blue, either. And it’s certainly not aqua blue.

Mr. Julian was standing on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, N.C., the college town where he was born and raised and where his family has owned a clothing store for nearly 75 years, and he knew Carolina blue when he saw it.
